Religious Education

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Matthew 28:19-20

As a Catholic school, we have an important role in fulfilling the mission of the church. Learning is a journey. A journey that will have joyous moments, upsetting moments and moments where hopeful, faith and love will see us through. Religious Education is an important part of this journey as it will help pupils to understand the mysteries of our faith.

Intent

Religious Education nurtures children in the Catholic faith.

Through creativity, scripture, working collaboratively and open discussions children will have an opportunity to ask questions, explore possibilities and use this to mould their values and opinions.

Our intention is to create individuals who are not only confident in expressing their values but also caring individuals who are role models to those around them, and who can contribute to the common good.

Implementation

The Way, the Truth and the Life scheme of work are used across the school.

This scheme allows children to study and explore a wide range of topics such as events in the Liturgical Calendar, famous Saints, inspirational people, Sacraments and important biblical stories, which transmit core Gospel Values.

Throughout the school, children are encouraged to focus on and understand the meaning behind scripture passages.

Additionally, through questioning, critical analysis and meditation, children are given the opportunity to explore and discuss important issues and reflect upon their own personal beliefs and values.

In all year groups children will be able to focus on a topic and cover the key areas of learning in Religious Education:

Knowledge and understanding (learning about Religious Education)

Engagement response (learning from Religious Education)

Spiritual reflection

At Holy Family, we encourage children to constantly reflect upon and apply Gospel values to their own lives, so that they may become confident and caring citizens. Twice a year children focus on looking at other faiths. By studying other faiths, children develop mutual respect and tolerance for people of other faiths.

Impact

Our children leave Holy Family as responsible, caring individuals.

The Religious Education curriculum will prepare children for the world ahead and create individuals who once leaving Holy Family, will continue to follow in the footsteps of Jesus as his disciples.

Through our teaching of other faiths, children will have an understanding and be open to the different people that exist in our society.
