Physical Education

Intent

At Holy Family, we strive for excellence so that all children are given an opportunity to reach their individual potential in preparation for their lives in the wider community. It is our intention to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE in all young people. We aim to help ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and help young people to develop essential skills like leadership and teamwork.

It is our intention within each lesson, to give every child the opportunity to develop skills in PE, consider the impact on their health and fitness, compete/perform and evaluate. It is our intention to ensure children progress in every lesson. All lessons are carefully differentiated which helps to ensure that learning is as tailored and inclusive as possible. With the support of Val Sabin's scheme of work, we ensure that children have a varied and well mapped out PE curriculum. It provides the opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the PE National Curriculum for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 for both indoor and outdoor PE. This progression is clearly identified on progression maps and each lesson has been carefully planned to match these. In EYFS & KS1, the focus of the PE curriculum is on the development of the fundamental skills that will be built upon in KS2 when they are applied in specific sports. It is also our intention to ensure that every child has access to at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Implementation

PE at Holy Family Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, and swimming.

-

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. During the lessons children are given the opportunity to practise existing skills, build on these to develop new or more advanced skills, and assess their understanding and review concepts, helping children to embed learning.

Sports play zones are incorporated during playtimes each day, where children can keep active and explore a variety of activities. Every year, children from Y6, Y5, and Y4 become monitors for the sports play zones. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time breaks, as well as for our annual Sports day.

In addition, children are encouraged to participate in a varied range of sports extra-curricular activities after schools such as football, fun and fitness, bench ball, gymnastics and dance.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area, for example, Sportathon and indoor athletics. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Children participate in workshops covering a variety of activities throughout the year. For example, dance, cricket, bicycle training, providing children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and try something new.

Children in Year 4 start going swimming, once a week, from January to the end of summer, and then the following academic year from September until December, in which we include any children that are still unable to swim from Y5/Y6, to achieve the 25m government target by the end of Y6. This cycle is repeated every year.

Children are taking part of “Daily Mile”, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Children in EYFS participate in a range of planned gross motor skill activities which develop their skills in a progressive manner, this includes working on the use of large apparatus during their child-led learning.

Impact

Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all pupils. We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. Children understand how to lead a happy healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE. We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.
