Maths

Intent

At Holy Family School we aim to create a sense of excitement and curiosity around mathematics. Children are encouraged to make links between the skills they are learning and the world around them. We intend to provide the foundation for an understanding of the world and is essential to everyday life.

‘Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas.’ (National Curriculum)

At Holy Family we ensure that pupils become fluent, reason mathematically and solve problems, making rich connections to develop competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.

At Holy Family, we teach our children how to make sense of the world around them by developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. We want our children to recognise and understand relationships and patterns in numbers in the world around them. We expect Mathematics to be utilised as a tool beyond the daily Mathematics lessons and beyond the classroom.

Implementation

We use a variety of teaching styles and opportunities for children to learn and develop their Mathematical skills and competencies, both individually and collaboratively. The main aim of all lessons is to develop children’s knowledge, understanding and skills, applying these to a variety of contexts. There is a focus on developing the children’s arithmetic alongside written calculation strategies. Stem questions are utilised to develop mathematical reasoning whilst drawing upon knowledge and properties of numbers.

Lessons are planned and sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before. Teachers follow the White Rose Maths Hub materials, with a Termly Overview and skills progression across each strand, to support their planning. These are extended with Mastery Materials to embed understanding and make richer links to the wider world.

Times tables are taught in daily lessons both explicitly and discretely. This allows children to focus on specific tables to ensure they have a secure knowledge and understanding of all tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4.

Impact

The majority of our Y6 children will leave Holy Family:

Fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics

Follow a line of enquiry and reason mathematically by conjecturing about relationships and making generalisations.

Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication.

Children will develop both fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills that can be applied to real-life situations.
