British Values

'Jesus teaches us another way: Go out.
Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask.
Become the Word in body as well as spirit.'
Pope Francis

At Holy Family, in all aspects of life, we aspire for our pupils to follow in the footsteps of Christ. We teach our children to understand that as British citizens they all have a role in the upkeep of society. This is why it is important for our pupils to understand the five key essentials in fulfilling their role as citizens in Britain, whilst setting the example that Christ set us.

Through each British Value children will have a chance to reflect upon other Gospel Values.

Democracy- Service and Integrity

We think it is vital that our children understand that they have a voice in activities taking place across the school. In years 1-6 all children in their classes vote for their school council representatives. The school council representatives have an opportunity to speak on behalf of their peers when talking about events across the school. The representatives will have a say in changes made around the school, reinforcing to children that everybody has the right to contribute to the common good.

The Rule of Law- Justice and Peace

We aim to help children understand how rules are there to protect and benefit everyone. Each class will draft up their own classroom rules at the beginning of the academic year. As a class, they are encouraged to think about the kind of classroom they would feel free to learn in. Children are expected to abide by these rules throughout the year. Each class uses a behaviour ladder to reinforce to children that there are consequences to breaking the rules.

Individual Liberty- Truth and Dignity

Children understand that rules are there to keep everybody safe. Children will learn to think about their choices and how they need to ensure that their choices follow the rules and benefit all and that they are responsible for making their own choices.

Mutual Respect- Forgiveness and Humility

As a Catholic school, respect is one of our core Gospel Values. As children of God respect is an important way to maintain relationships with everyone. We hope that this value of respect will remain with children even when they are not at school. Children will learn to understand that respect should be a part of who they are. Children will think about how they can show respect to themselves, other people, property and the environment.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs- Compassion and Mercy

The study of other faiths is a part of our Religious Education. Twice a year, children are given the opportunity to study other faiths. As well as inviting other faith leaders we also encourage visits to other places of worship. The study of other faiths will enable children to learn to coexist with everybody living in our society.
